GoPro Hero is arguably the best compact point-and-shoot camera available today! This GoPro Hero6 review will cover the details on why we think it’s worth getting one if this sort of camera is what you’re looking for!
Having picked up the GoPro Hero last winter of 2019, I use it very often. I bring it along for all of my fishing trips and it has been one of my best purchases to date! I was reluctant at first due to the hefty price tag so I picked up a AKASO V50 Pro Native from Amazon for nearly 1/3 of the price.
After a week of using the AKASO, I was not satisfied with the image and video quality. This was a big issue for me since I needed very high quality multimedia. This can be true especially when the environment is lacking light. The AKASO is still a decent budget camera, but no where near what the GoPro offers. If you are looking for a very affordable waterproof action camera, you should give the AKASO camera a try. It has 4k video output along with 20MP imaging. Since this isn’t a comparison article, I’ll just quickly mention that while the AKASO V50 Pro have similar technical power to the GoPro Hero6, it does NOT the same robust features to maximize its full potential. Once the GoPro arrived, the quality difference between the two cameras was very noticeable. This can be partly due to the GoPro shooting at an impressive 60 frames per second compared to the AKASO 30fps. The video quality, and ease of use is where GoPro edges the AKASO V50 Pro.

Video and Photo Quality

Both video and photo quality is great. I couldn’t be happier with the results. As you can see below, you can hardly notice the difference. The video and photo quality receives a 5 out of 5 rating.
I have brought my GoPro Hero6 with me on every fishing trip to date. To give you an idea, I had about 100+ fishing trips last year. The GoPro was able to withstand a few dings from droppings to hitting against the wall etc. It is still fully operating as usual. The GoPro Hero6 is encased with a sturdy waterproof plastic frame and gets a 5 out of 5 rating for its durability.
Ease of Use
This can be a subjective area, depending on how comfortable you are with using tech gadgets and cameras. I have owned and used many cameras in the past, so this is based on my personal judgement. In comparison to others, the GoPro Hero6 is very simple to use.
For illustration purpose:
- To record, press the red button, to stop recording, press it again.
- To toggle between camera and video mode, press the mode button.
However, I did find how to power down the GoPro a bit cumbersome after recording. So I just stop the recording and it auto-power off within seconds.

Other Key Features
Touchscreen & Voice Control
If the large buttons aren’t convenient enough, there’s touchscreen with easy to navigate menus. Then if all fails, there’s voice control that can be easily enabled. The voice control can be activated by “GoPro start recording”, or “GoPro take a photo”! In addition, there are 12 commands that are available.
The GoPro Hero6 is user friendly. The 2″ touchscreen is easy to see and the LED window in the front allow users to easy get information.
If you’re looking for a very lightweight and compact camera, you will be very happy with any GoPro camera. It offers high quality imaging and videos. The GoPro Hero6 is about 4.2 ounces, and has the dimension of 1.75 x 2.44 x 1.26 inches.
The battery life is pretty impressive, but has to be managed accordingly. I’ll say this because you simply drain the battery if you kept it recording continuously. Based on the manufacturer’s description and personal experience, it can last roughly about 90 minutes to 2 hours at 1080p/30fps. The way I manage this is through short meaningful clips. The charge time can take between to 2 to 4 hours. One thing to note is during hotter temperatures, the GoPro battery will drain faster. You should also not leave your camera charged for longer than needed.
The GoPro Hero6 battery life receives a 4 out of 5 rating compared to other small compact point-and-shoot cameras.
The maximum capacity is 256 gb and a micro SD card is the choice. Transferring the photos and videos is fairly simple using GoPro’s software or direct cable file transfer. The GoPro Hero6 storage receives a 5 out of 5 rating.
The GoPro Hero6 is an older model which was replaced by GoPro Hero7 and the latest is GoPro Hero9. In short, all of the GoPro cameras are very good at different price points. Obviously, the newer gadgets offer improvements with quality, image stabilization and tweaks to the user interface. Depending on your need, sometimes the older model has enough to keep you happy without having spend a few extra hundred dollars.
The GoPro Hero6 is a gadget that I use frequently, and has kept me happy. I don’t plan to upgrade it until there’s a ground breaking version that is worth my plunking down another few hundred bucks for. Overall, the GoPro Hero6 is a great camera and suits my need very well.
Overall, the GoPro Hero6 receives an outstanding 4.8 score out of 5.0.
Don’t forget to get a chest mount so that you can take your GoPro everywhere with you!
